Supporting Movement Through Smarter School Uniforms

A recent BBC report has highlighted growing concerns that traditional school uniforms may be hindering young people’s ability to move freely and stay active during the school day. Experts, including child psychologists and education advocates, argue that formal uniforms — often designed with looks rather than activity in mind — can unintentionally restrict children’s movement, comfort and participation in play and sport.

This discussion comes amid wider research showing that conventional uniforms may be a barrier to physical activity, with pupils wearing more flexible, activity-friendly clothing tending to be more engaged and comfortable throughout their day. An “Always Active” uniform — one that prioritises comfort, flexibility and durability — has been championed by organisations like the Youth Sport Trust and the Active Uniform Alliance as a means to encourage movement not just in PE lessons but across the entire school day.

"If I had a pound for every time I said 'tuck your shirt in', I wouldn't need to teach, I'd be a millionaire," laments one Derbyshire secondary school teacher

However, it’s important to recognise the value of traditional uniform too. Classic schoolwear plays a significant role in creating a sense of pride, identity and professionalism. A smart blazer, crisp shirt and polished shoes promote high standards and help pupils present themselves confidently, something many schools rightly continue to prioritise. There is absolutely a time and place for looking formal and representing the school community in a traditional way.

We support schools in finding the right solution for their ethos and environment. Whether that means a fully traditional uniform, a more active alternative, or a blended approach, we can provide sporty, durable options for schools that see the benefit — without compromising on quality or presentation.

Because ultimately, uniform should reflect both who a school is — and how its pupils learn best.

As schools explore how uniform impacts pupil wellbeing and activity levels, we look at the case for more flexible, sporty options, while recognising the continued value of traditional schoolwear in promoting pride and presentation.
